The Mary Helliar Travel Scholarship

The Mary Helliar Scholarship is run by the Great Britain and Ireland Region of the International Plant Propagators Society - IPPS - to assist horticulturists with travel in order to study aspects of horticulture that will further their careers.  The scholarship is open to all members of IPPS and also to non-members residing in the UK.

Mary Helliar was a founder member of IPPS and contributed much to its with horticulture and the encouragement she gave to those starting out on their horticultural career.  She was a charitable person - only too keen to help anyone.  It was therefore decided that it would be fitting to have a travel scholarship in her honour.

The Scholarship

The scholarship assists with travelling and/or related expenses, either at home or abroad.  IPPS has more than 2,000 members worldwide, some of whom would be in a position to help those wishing to travel.

Usually at least one award is made each year to the person who, in the opinion of the IPPS selection panel, has a properly planned study tour proposal, has shown that much could be gained from the tour, and is willing to share any information gained with other IPPS members.  The successful person is required to produce a written report and give a presentation at the IPPS Annual Conference on completion of the study.

Recent Mary Helliar study tours have included visits to USA, Japan, Eastern Europe and Chile and have generally involved studies looking at various aspects of propagation and cultivation.

How To Apply

Prospective applicants should apply by 31^st October for an award the following year.

Applicants are required to give an outline of their proposed tour following the headings on the application form, giving as much information as possible about their interests, the places to be visited and amount of time to be spent.  Applicants may be asked to attend an interview in December for final selection at a time/place suitable for the interviewing panel.  Please use the form only to summarise details of the proposed trip.  A more thorough and detailed proposal should follow.
